What a surge protector actually does
A surge protective device (SPD) clamps voltage spikes to safe levels and routes the excess energy to ground. A Type-2 SPD installed at the main panel protects everything downstream.
Type 1 vs Type 2 vs Type 3
- Type 1 — outside the meter or on the line side of the main breaker. Highest clamping.
- Type 2 — at the main panel on the load side. Most common residential install.
- Type 3 — point-of-use, like a power strip. Cleans up what makes it past the first two.
Best practice for DMV homes: Type 2 at the main + Type 3 at electronics and HVAC.
Why every home needs one
- Pepco, BGE, and Dominion grids see 200+ transient surges per year
- HVAC, EV chargers, induction ranges all have sensitive electronics
- Nearby lightning strikes induce surges even without a direct hit
- A $500 SPD replaces $5,000–$15,000 of avoided electronics damage
Brands we install
- Siemens FS140 (best value)
- Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA
- Square D HEPD80 (matches QO panels)
- Leviton 51120-1 (modular)
Install time
About 60 minutes including breaker, mounting, labeling, and a brief power-off.
Cost
$400–$700 installed, including device and dedicated breaker.
