1. Test every GFCI monthly
Press TEST, then RESET. If it doesn't trip, replace it.
2. Replace any cord that's frayed or warm
Cord damage = arc risk. New cords are cheap.
3. Don't daisy-chain power strips
One strip into the wall, period.
4. Match the bulb to the fixture
Over-wattage bulbs are a top cause of fixture fires.
5. Keep water away from electronics
Bathroom and kitchen outlets need GFCI; outdoor needs GFCI and a weather-resistant cover.
6. Cover unused outlets if kids are in the house
Tamper-resistant outlets are the modern fix; covers work in older homes.
7. Don't ignore burning smells
The first sign of insulation breakdown. Power off the affected circuit and call.
8. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years
Combo smoke/CO alarms in every bedroom and one per level, hardwired with battery backup.
9. Map your panel
Label every breaker. In an emergency you don't want to be guessing.
10. Get an inspection every 10 years
Especially if your home is over 30 years old or you've added major loads.
