Ceiling Fan Installation Guide

Fan-rated boxes, downrod sizing, blade pitch, and proper switch wiring for a quiet, safe install.

The number-one cause of failed fan installs

Wrong ceiling box. A standard ceiling box is rated for 50 lb static. A fan needs a fan-rated box (saddle or pancake fan box) capable of supporting dynamic load. Without it, fans wobble loose over months.

Sizing the fan

  • 10x10 room: 42 inch
  • 12x12 room: 52 inch
  • 15x15 room: 56–60 inch
  • Vaulted ceiling: extended downrod, 7–9 ft clearance to floor

Blade pitch

12–14 degree pitch moves more air than 8–10 degree. Quality matters here.

Switch wiring

  • Pull-chain: cap one switch leg
  • Two switches: requires 14/3 from switch to fan
  • Smart switch: requires neutral at the switch box

Install steps (high level)

  1. Power off and verify with tester.
  2. Replace the existing box with a fan-rated saddle box.
  3. Pre-wire ground first, then neutral, then hot.
  4. Hang fan on hook (most modern fans), connect, lift into place.
  5. Balance test, install blades.
  6. Restore power and run on all speeds.

When to call

  • Two-story foyers or vaulted ceilings without attic access
  • No fan-rated box and finished ceiling
  • 3-way switches involved
