Like-for-like swaps
Replacing a standard receptacle with another standard receptacle, or a single-pole switch with another single-pole switch, with power off and a tester verifying off, is allowed for homeowners in MD, DC, and VA.
What to buy
- 15A or 20A spec-grade receptacles (avoid budget builder-grade)
- Tamper-resistant in living areas
- Decora-style switches and outlets if you prefer the look
- Lutron Caséta or Diva for any switch you'll dim
Tools
- Voltage tester (non-contact + plug-in)
- Insulated screwdrivers
- Wire strippers
- Linesman pliers
- Headlamp
Procedure
- Confirm power is off at the breaker (tester both probes).
- Unscrew and pull the device out.
- Note wire positions: hot (black/red), neutral (white), ground (green/bare).
- Use side-screw terminals, not backstabs. Wrap clockwise around the screw.
- Torque to spec.
- Fold wires in, reinstall, restore power, test.
When to stop and call
- Aluminum branch wiring (silvery solid wire, not copper)
- Three or more cables in one box
- Backstabbed wires that won't release
- Burnt insulation or melted plastic
- Anything 3-way or 4-way unless you've done one before
