The simple version
Most DMV Level 2 EV charger installs cost between $900 and $1,800. Outliers go higher when panel work or trenching is involved.
Scenario pricing
- Garage on same wall as panel, < 15 ft run: $850 – $1,200
- Garage two rooms from panel, 30–60 ft run: $1,200 – $1,700
- Detached garage, trenching < 50 ft: $2,200 – $3,400
- With 100A → 200A panel upgrade: $4,000 – $6,500
- With load-management module (no upgrade): $1,400 – $2,200
What drives price up
- Wire run length (each extra 50 ft adds 1–2 hours and materials)
- Surface vs in-wall conduit on finished walls
- Trenching for detached structures
- Panel capacity (load calc may require an upgrade)
- Drywall repair if no clean wire path exists
What drives price down
- Panel located in attached garage
- Existing dedicated circuit (rare but ideal)
- Plug-in charger on existing 14-50 outlet
- Multiple chargers installed at once (one trip, shared materials)
Permit fees
$60–$180 depending on jurisdiction. Always pulled by the licensed electrician.
