Circuit Breaker Won't Reset
Your circuit breaker won't reset — it's either a real fault, a bad breaker, or a mid-trip position. Here's how to tell.
A breaker that won't reset means one of three things: (1) it's stuck mid-trip and needs to be pushed fully OFF before ON, (2) there's a real short or ground fault on the circuit that it's protecting against, or (3) the breaker itself has failed. Don't force it — the wire behind it is trying to tell you something.
Key details
- Push breaker fully OFF, then fully ON
- Immediate trip on reset = short or ground fault
- Silent no-trip = failed breaker
- Warm breaker = call an electrician
- Never wedge or bypass a breaker
- Federal Pacific / Zinsco breakers often fail closed
The mid-trip position
Some breakers, when tripped, sit in a middle position that looks close to ON but isn't. Grip the handle, push it firmly all the way to OFF (you'll feel a click), then all the way to ON. If it holds, you're good. If not, keep reading.
If it trips instantly
You have a hard short or ground fault. Something is directly connecting hot to neutral or ground. Unplug everything on the circuit and try again — if it still trips, the fault is in the wiring itself and needs a licensed diagnosis.
If it just clicks and does nothing
The breaker is likely dead. Replacement is straightforward for a licensed electrician. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Challenger breakers are especially prone to failing closed and are recommended for replacement panel-wide, not just device-by-device.
