Burning Electrical Smell

A burning electrical smell is a fire risk — here's what to do right now and when to call for emergency service.

Overview

A burning plastic or fish-like odor near an outlet, switch, panel, or fixture means overheated insulation. This is a fire hazard, full stop. Kill the breaker to that circuit, stop using the affected area, and call a licensed electrician for same-day service. Do not wait for the smell to go away — the damage is already done and the fault is still there.

Key details

  • Kill power to the affected circuit at the panel
  • Do not run appliances on that circuit
  • Check outlets and switches for warmth or discoloration
  • Photograph anything discolored for the electrician
  • Call for same-day / emergency service
  • Do NOT keep using the circuit

What causes it

The most common causes are (1) a loose connection in a receptacle or switch heating up under load, (2) an overloaded circuit where wire insulation is cooking, (3) a failing device — a bad receptacle or damaged appliance cord, (4) a failing breaker inside the panel, or (5) rarely, a rodent-damaged wire in a wall or attic.

Why you can't just replace the outlet

The smell tells you where the heat is. The cause might be upstream — a loose neutral at a previous receptacle on the same run, or an overloaded shared circuit. A proper diagnosis traces the whole circuit and fixes the root, not just the symptom.

When it's the panel

A burning smell at the panel itself is more serious than at a receptacle. Kill the main breaker if you can do so safely, evacuate if the smell is strong, and call for emergency service. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels are known to fail this way.
