Smoke Detector Installation Cost

What hardwired, interconnected smoke and CO detectors cost in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia — with real price ranges and code notes.

Overview

A single hardwired smoke or CO detector install typically runs $85–$180 per device when replacing existing hardwired units. Whole-home code upgrades for older houses without interconnected smokes range $650–$1,800 depending on the number of devices and access to run new interconnect wire. We install First Alert, Kidde, BRK, and Nest Protect units.

Key details

  • Single hardwired device swap: $85–$180
  • Whole-home code upgrade (5-8 devices): $650–$1,800
  • 10-year sealed battery devices standard
  • NFPA 72 interconnect verified
  • Combo smoke + CO devices available
  • Nest Protect and smart devices supported

What the code actually requires

New and remodeled construction in MD, DC, and VA requires interconnected hardwired smoke alarms with battery backup on every level, in every sleeping area, and outside every sleeping area. Homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages also require CO alarms per state code.

Wireless interconnect for older homes

Running interconnect wire through an existing finished home is invasive and expensive. Wireless-interconnected devices (Kidde/First Alert) satisfy code with much less drywall repair — usually the right answer for retrofits.

10-year sealed batteries are now the standard

Maryland's smoke alarm law and most modern codes require 10-year sealed-battery devices in the primary bedroom areas. No more middle-of-the-night chirps.
